Entry requirements:

An undergraduate degree is generally requested as applicants will be expected to study at postgraduate level, however applications from practitioners without degrees, but with relevant experience, are encouraged.

Applications for 2020/21 will open in Spring 2020.


Who is this course aimed at?

This pathway has been developed to support all early years practitioners who are leading and managing provision for two-year-olds or planning to do so in the near future. It is linked to current policy and practice and will support those preparing for inspection.

What are the main themes?

- What’s special about being two? 
- Thinking with two-year-olds – understanding the two-year-old mind and the drive for relationships, competence and autonomy 
- Children’s development from birth as self-regulated learners - links to play, active learning, and creative and critical thinking
- The implications of child development for pedagogy in the prime areas of Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language and Physical Development
- The importance of attachment and the role of the key person
- Effective interaction strategies for supporting the development of language and thinking
- Sensory input in learning, schema and the link to concept development
- Active learning, praise and intrinsic motivation, the role of environment and developing ‘can do’ mindsets
- Working effectively and inclusively with parents and carers
- The observation, assessment and planning cycle ‘in the moment’  and the summative assessment required for the two-year-old progress check/integrated review.
- Leading learning and supporting and managing change
- Reflection, evaluation and action research to improve current practice and provision
How will it help my practice?

Many settings and schools are new to working with, playing with, and thinking with two-year-olds.

This pathway provides an extensive opportunity to reflect on effective practice with children living through one of the most significant developmental periods of their lives and to use this enhanced knowledge to envision development.

Participants will have the chance to learn more about child development theories as well as develop their pedagogical leadership skills through setting based tasks.

Tutor input, group discussions and activities, plus two assignments will support and challenge each participant’s unique journey in developing effective two-year-old practice and provision.
