Architecture and Early Childhood Education

APEI (Association of Early Childhood Education Professionals), FAUP (Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto) and OSMOPE (Obra Social Movimentos Pontes Educativas) are pleased to present this seminar titled “Architecture and Early Childhood Education: building the present…and the future”. The aim of the event is to reflect on how to reconcile the design of educational environments with the needs and demands of childhood development, reinforcing the centrality of the role of architects and educators in building reflective, inclusive and sustainable educational spaces, capable of promoting the integral development of children.

Guest speakers at the opening of the seminar will be the famous architects Takaharu and Yui Tezuka who, among other awards, were responsible for the design of the Fuji Kindergarten, considered by UNESCO in 2013 to be the best in the world. Architect Marco Guinoulhiac, a lecturer at FAUP, will focus his presentation on the pedagogical relationship between play and design. Next, a pedagogical practice will be presented by educator Sílvia Berény and designer Rita Brandão, from OSMOPE, two teachers who usually work with APEI and who have developed excellent work with children under six. To close the seminar, the architect Adriana Freyberger, one of Brazil's best-known international architects, will present on the cooperative construction of play spaces.
