Centenary conversation: Practice-based research and European traditions of early childhood education

This wonderful evening organised by Early Education and hosted at CREC was filled with deep discussion between Prof. Ferre Laevers, Prof Christine Pascal and Prof Tony Bertram around the value of practitioner research to support our understanding of the complexity and reality of daily practice.

The dialogue explored:

The European ECE tradition and shared understandings of quality;

Centenary messages for ensuring practice-led research informs the current development of ECE policy and practice;

A trio of perspectives on current and future challenges for ECE.

The session exposed some of the key issues but also gave me hope that there is a way forward to develop early years education resulting in positive outcomes and sustainable change.

I was inspired by the dialogue around thinking creatively and ambitiously to find effective ways to prepare children for the future. This included empowering educators and engaging them in deep critical reflection about how they teach not just what they teach.

Early years education needs to focus on the positive difference it can make to young children’s lives and be at the heart of all that we do.”
