Working for Social Justice in Early Childhood
As a strong advocate of social justice for all young children, BECERA and its forum encourages careful consideration of inequities in access, participation and the fulfilment of human rights in our practice and in our research.
Despite growing awareness of the need to give every child the best start in life, many are still facing systemic, social and cultural barriers impacting their life chances and achievements long term. These disparities, in access to services and education, in participation, are societal challenges that must be at the forefront of the public debate. Our sector needs more activists working in solidarity to challenge these injustices and create a different and more optimistic outlook for our children.
This year’s BECERA Conference aims to bring us together to share our practice-based research and discuss ways in which our professional activism can lead to a more equitable inclusive and empowering future for young children and all those who support them. Our work is multi-professional and transdisciplinary and challenges we face are therefore complex, relational, systemic, practice based, political and policy related. We are inviting proposals which showcase this intricacy and which reflect the shared commitment to working in partnership and solidarity for social justice in early childhood.

“There was such a diverse range of thoughtfully presented research projects, which provided a great deal to reflect on in my own practice. The overall organisation of the event felt considered and well-paced, with sessions flowing clearly across the day. The free-flow poster presentations created a low-stakes opportunity to engage in discussion and ask questions more informally. Many of the conversations resonated with my developing identity as a practitioner, and it was genuinely moving to engage so thoughtfully with the content.”

About BECERA
In 2010 CREC launched and hosted the first British Early Childhood Education Research Association (BECERA) Conference and it has been held annually ever since.

Conference Programme
Our 17th Annual Conference will be hosted at the Studio in central Birmingham on 16th February and will feature keynote talks, poster sessions and research presentations grouped into thematic symposia.
